Abstract
Object permanence is the ability to represent an object even when it is not visible. Is this knowledge inborn as Baillargeon suggests, or is it a long process of discovery, as Piaget suggested? I illustrate how we can engage students in this thought-provoking debate with two magic tricks. Students learn an example of a crosscutting theme in Introductory Psychology – how we understand a psychological phenomenon depends on how we measure it.
