About

Luis Edgar Cabrales Arriaga was born in Tampico, Mexico. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Tamaulipas in Altamira, Mexico. He gained experience working as an engineer at M&G Polymers, one of the largest polyester producers in the world. Afterwards, he went on to earn an MS in Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University (TTU) working on research projects related to polymer science. Then, he joined the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute (FBRI) at TTU as a research associate. While working at the Institute, he earned a Ph.D. with specialization in Fibers and Biopolymers from TTU in 2011. From 2012 to 2022 he was one of the engineering founding faculty members of the engineering program at CSUB. He started as assistant professor, then associate professor and finally full professor. He was the Chair of the Department of Physics and Engineering at California State University-Bakersfield. During his time at CSUB, he worked in multiple research projects collaborating with industry, government and local partners. Currently, he is the Founding Faculty of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at CSUMB and the Chair of the Department. At CSUMB, he is working toward the creation of a BS in Mechatronics Engineering, which will start in Fall 2024. He has worked in the areas of water treatment technologies. In specific, he has been working on the treatment of produced water from oilfields. He is also interested in the study of modification of polymeric surfaces to impart oleophobic properties, cellulose materials, and the polymers from renewable resources.
